Opening the trunk should be a relatively simple task, but automakers seem focused on making it as difficult as possible nowadays. The common way of doing it used to be to place a release under the license plate ledge but it seems that those are being replaced by remote releases with no physical handles anymore (as on my Grandma’s ‘10 Civic...) Of course there are the outliers, but it seems the latest thing is to either go the remote method or to plaster a giant handle on the liftgate...

Kinja'd!!!

Why gigantic gaping trunk handle placed randomly on trunk lid? Because backup camera, that’s why...

Kinja'd!!!

Of course the French have hidden their trunk releases in the ‘0’s of the badges on their Peugeots...

So what do you think Oppo?

What are the best/worst/most uniquely designed trunk releases?

The new VW Beetle latch is pretty cool the way it swings around and the handle is under the badge.

Mine is like this. 2010 VW Golf. The latch is inside the rear emblem. Push in the top and pull the bottom, hatch releases.

Mmmm, I do like that...not sure if US versions got it or not but it took me a moment to see it...way better than the CR-V’s blatancy...

I remember seeing that on my uncle’s Golf and thinking it was awesome! It’s like the old ones they had on Caprices...

Kinda like the ones on the old 740 sedans where the keyhole was at the top and you pulled out the bottom to open (I think, it’s been five years now since I’ve used one...)

Worst is the old Jeep SJ (Wagoneer/Cherokee) without power windows.

Kinja'd!!!

First, you unlock and roll the window down. Pray that the splines don’t strip out!

Kinja'd!!!

Then you reach inside to grab the release for the tailgate.

But if you own an SJ you put up with it because they’re just so damn awesome!

Older Honda Odysseys had the key slot part of the taillight. The handle kinda blends in too.

Way better than the CR-V although I don’t understand why the handle isn’t just above the license plate as on the next gen Ody...

The Scion tC and xB have a lever you squeeze. It’ll release the lock, and then you can lift to open. Problem is most people squeeze and lift at the same time, so they end up breaking the handle off, which is held on with two screws in plastic.

I was wondering why so many tC’s in the area have that trim piece broken off! That’s a really interesting design flaw; have you experienced it for yourself, thus the fact that you know about it?

It’s widely known, but yeah it happened on my xB. Replaced it with a chrome piece that actually doesn’t look bad at all.

That’s one of the few things i don’t like on my ‘14 CR-V. It always throws people off.
